Change Motivation

People have a hard time adapting to change, right? We hear it all the time. In business we hear about resistance to change. In self help we hear about coping with change. In aging we hear about masking change. But in this area, I cannot relate. If there is anything that motivates me in life, it is change. I adapt easily. I seek change. In fact, I thrive during change. So for the past couple of months, when everything was feeling a bit out of my control and my challenges in life were acting as barriers to change, my stress level was high. I was having to cope with lack of change. My productivity suffered and my motivation was completely lacking.

But on Friday, Braden and I moved into our new house. We spent our first night in an unfurnished fortress of unpacked boxes. In fact, Brady didn’t even have a bed. He had a camping adventure in his new room. He watched a movie in his tent with his pillow, blanket, water bottle, and blue bunny. And then he fell asleep – and he did not leave him room once all night. A victory on day one of my “get my life together” campaign! For months, Braden has been struggling with sleeping in his room alone. Yet we enter this new home and this new era on a positive note. Talk about motivating.

I spent the majority of the weekend and Monday getting things unpacked and organized as best I could without the furniture. And today, Tuesday, I feel like all the effort and extra expense has proven worthwhile, yet again. I woke up at 4:45 this morning to get ready for my 5:30 personal trainer appointment. (I hadn’t seen Biff in three months.) I had a great workout, came home, and when I walked in the door I made coffee that I took to work in a my travel mug (after a year of buying a Large Coffee Skim Milk Only from the Dunkin’ Donuts drive thru five to six days a week). I also packed my lunch (which hasn’t happened in a good two months), left early for work (I’m not even going to say how long it’s been since that), went to my old house and packed and organized, and came home and ate leftovers.

Brady comes home tomorrow to a completely unpacked room and orderly toy area. I’m looking forward to solidifying a routine for us over the next few weeks. All it took was a little change to make a big difference. I am back on track and ready to take on the world – or at least the tuna casserole I’m planning to make for dinner tomorrow night.

You would think that if I’m trying to start a [insert appropriate word here – career, hobby, waste of time, empire – to name a few options] in writing, I could at least have the creativity to come up with a name for my blog. But no. Sorry to disappoint. This reminds me of when I got a new cat in college and called it “the cat” for weeks. Nothing seemed to fit, but then, one day the cat just named himself. He was being oh so “Shady”. I’m hoping the same thing will happen here. I’ve never done anything like this before, but that’s no reason not to do it now. In fact, you should all feel incredibly blessed to be fortunate enough to get to see my multiple Facebook status updates every day AND now you get to read my blog as well! God is good. I’m at what feels like a very positive turning point in my life. One of those times where everything sort of starts falling into place. Since splitting with my ex-husband, my life has been quite a roller coaster ride. But finally, I feel like I’m starting to plant some roots and in doing so, I thought I ought to get going on writing as well. No time better than the present. Besides, what do I have to be afraid of? You won’t read it? I wouldn’t even know! (Just like I’m sure some of you have hidden me on your newsfeed on FB. I don’t know it, so I just keep posting!) So read it or don’t – either way I’m going to put it out there. Here goes…
